FAQs
How do you know the gym and paddle programs work?
I have a BPhEd(hons) in Exercise Science from Otago University including strength and conditioning training. My honours topic involved testing the relationship between body composition and performance using various anthropometric methods. After University I worked as a gym instructor and was involved in a masters proposal to test the efficacy of different gym based training methods for sprint kayak performance. This involved testing the elite NZ kayakers and comparing Strength & Conditioning scores to their sprint kayak performance. Through this experience I learnt off some of the best trainers at the NZ high performance centre. Since then I put my focus into my own training using my knowledge to make myself a better paddler.

Do you do on water paddling programs as well?
Yes, I will have some basic programs to follow which include some paddling programs. Paddling programs can also be done for my 1 on 1 clients. I will also happily work with any coaches to review / improve programming and help with gym based training.
How experienced do I need to be?
Some experience in the gym is need for online program, however happy to provide advice on where to seek face to face personal training. Happy to give advice to any level of paddler, on water coaching is available subject to your level, season and conditions.
Is this also Ocean Ski Canterbury?
Yes, with a focus on gym training to improve your paddling, be cool 🙂
How much extra time is needed in my training
If you are training in the gym already then none, its just restructuring your gym sessions to make you a better paddler. We can also add some pre paddling exercises before your sessions to help activate your muscles in the right way to help facilitate better technique. Winter is naturally a good time to focus more in the gym due to the colder weather.
How fast will I see improvement in my paddling
By adding consistent technique based training into your gym and paddling sessions, improvement can be very fast.
Do I still need to paddle
Yes, the gym based training will support your on water training. Happy to chat about how to structure this in a one on one.
